The inevitable result of “it”

What you will see below is the result of people being told they should see other people as “it.”

A woman is violently assaulted in a Baltimore McDonalds, dragged across the floor, repeatedly kicked in the head until she has a seizure, and is left to convulse in a corner while employees watch and record the assault on their phones. They can be heard laughing and encouraging the assailants in the background. One posted his video on the internet later, to entertain his friends. You can hear one of them near the end, warning the assailants “police on their way. Y’all better get out of here.” The only person who attempts to help the woman is an elderly female customer.

Warning: The video is extremely violent and disturbing. I’m reposting it because it’s important that people understand the consequences of their careless, self-centered actions.

Two Guys Walk Into A Bar

I had lunch at Sal’s in Leesburg today.

When I mow my lawn, postage stamp that it is, I allow myself a beer or two that day. And this morning, I mowed my lawn . So I went to my favorite local watering hole, Sal’s NY Bar & Grill, for lunch.

At the bar was a gentleman who worked in the construction business. A long time Loudoun resident, he had some choice comments about Scott York, among others. It surprised me to hear that he was a big supporter of Mr. Eugene Delgaudio.

At that point, two beers in that I might have been, I expressed my personal disdain for Mr. Delgaudio. My barmate expressed his opinion that the Supervisor represented his constituents. I said that might have been true of the Sterling 20 years ago, but it is not true of Sterling today. I told my fellow-drinker-of-inexpensive-beer that it is the responsibility of an elected official to represent and serve ALL his or her constituents. I told him that the Sterling Supervisor had failed to do so. I told him that I strongly, strongly opposed any elected officials who referred to ANY of their constituents as “it.”

My friend at the bar said, “let’s get off the gay issue.”

Delgaudio has 10,000 Reasons to Recuse Himself from OpenBand Vote

Have you heard the one about OpenBand, the wholly-owned subsidiary of MC Dean, Inc.? OpenBand is the cable/Internet provider for some local HOAs, among other things. OpenBand’s service doesn’t exactly engender a lot of positive feelings among many of its customers.

Well, OpenBand’s cable franchise agreement is up for renewal by the Board of Supervisors this year. Franchise renegotiations and renewals like these are on a regular, known schedule. Cable companies, like OpenBand, pay very close attention to these schedules. At times, you can actually see their responsiveness to their customers swell as the deadline for franchise consideration creeps closer.

It is worthwhile to also pay attention to a cable company’s political donations as franchise renewals come up for consideration. For example, here in Loudoun County people affiliated with OpenBand’s corporate parent, MC Dean and Companies, donated $4,500 to Eugene Delgaudio (and $1,000 to Lori Waters) during the 2007 election cycle, and another $5,500 to Delgaudio overall. MC Dean’s OpenBand franchise would be considered by the Board elected in 2007, after all. Continue reading →

The names have changed but the map’s the same

Last night, the BOS voted to reconsider the names they gave to two of the districts. The Ashdowne district is now Ashburn, and the (Jennie) Dean district is now (again?) Dulles.

So here’s the line-up:

  • Algonkian (formerly Sugarland Run)
  • Ashburn (includes parts of Ashburn and most of Lansdowne)
  • Blue Ridge (includes Middleburg, Hamilton, Purcellville, Brambleton,  and some of Loudoun Valley Estates)
  • Broad Run (includes Dulles Town Center, some of Sterling, some of Ashburn, and most of the Broadlands)
  • Catoctin (includes Lovettsville and a bit of Lansdowne
  • Dulles (includes South Riding, the airport, and some of Loudoun Valley Estates)
  • Leesburg (includes…Leesburg)
  • Sterling (includes Sterling and Cascades)

More problem solving. Less politics. Baldwin for Supervisor.

I can’t think of a better, more succinct way of stating what we need from the 2011 (well, any) election.

All declared and potential candidates should study this website and adopt it as their model. This is what a serious campaign looks like.

I have known Malcolm Baldwin nearly as long as I’ve lived in Loudoun. I’m embarrassed to not recall exactly where and when we first met, but I’m quite certain it had something to do with helping our local community. His civic engagement has always embodied “more problem solving, less politics.”

Malcolm is exactly the person who can lead the adult conversations we need to have about difficult issues like the poorly-handled CBPO; his thoughtful, inclusive approach is the polar opposite of the hyperbole and intentionally divisive political exploitation of this issue seen in recent LCRC messaging. Malcolm is anything but a knee-jerk partisan or ideologue, and I couldn’t be more proud to have a person of his caliber and integrity to support as my next supervisor.

The campaign kick-off for Baldwin for Supervisor will be this coming Sunday, April 10, from 6-8 pm. The location is 8 Chains North winery in Hamilton. Come on out, you’ll be glad you did.

Rise up, “Ashdowne”

Ok, BoS. You’ve had your fun. Supervisor Waters, you managed to come up with the worst district name ever, a brilliant parody of someone’s perception of someone else’s stereotype of the idea of suburban hell memorialized in so many adolescence-themed television shows. It’s hilarious, and I mean that truly. The rest of you guys who went along with the joke: Epic. Really good stuff.

Now that you’ve all made your points, whatever they were, let’s allow the residents of what we all know everyone under a certain age, and many of the rest of us, will refer to as “Assclowne” to have their dignity back, ok?

This is what I know for sure about seats and Dem candidacies.

BOS:

  • Chair: Tom Bellanca is the Dem challenger to Scott York (I, formerly R).
  • Algonkian (formerly Sugarland Run): No candidate yet for the open seat being left by Susan Buckley, though I’ve heard rumblings.
  • Ashdowne (Ashburn, Lansdowne): Valdis Ronis is running for this open seat.
  • Blue Ridge (Brambleton/Middleburg/Hamilton/Purcellville/Blue Ridge Mountains): No Dem challenger has appeared yet to run against Jim Burton (I).
  • Broad Run (Dulles Town Center, Broadlands, Sterling): Andrea McGimsey is the incumbent. No primary challenger.
  • Catoctin: Malcolm Baldwin is running for the open seat being left by Sally Kurtz.
  • (Jennie) Dean (South Riding/Airport/Loudoun Valley Estates): Larry Roeder is running for this open seat.
  • Leesburg: Kelly Burk is the incumbent. No primary challenger.
  • Sterling: the Dems have three candidates to run against Eugene Delgaudio (R): Al Nevarez; Bahri Aliriza; and Dan Lloyd. That’ll be a good primary. I’m looking forward to it.

Constitutional Offices:

  • Clerk of the Court: No Democratic candidate as yet to run against Gary Clemens (R)
  • Commissioner of the Revenue: Joshua Actor is going to challenge  Robert Wertz (R).
  • Commonwealth’s Attorney: Jennifer Wexton is running against Jim Plowman (R).
  • Sheriff: No Democratic candidate as yet, though it seems the Republicans have a few! Four candidates there to run against Sheriff Simpson (I, formerly R)!
  • Treasurer: No Democratic candidate as yet to run against Roger Zurn (R).

Soil and Water Conservation District

  • There are three seats up for election this November. Peter Rush is a Democratic incumbent on this board. I sent him a note yesterday to ask if he’s running again, I’ll update with his answer.

I won’t discuss the School Board in this post, because there are so many unknowns still. Many incumbents have said that they’ll decide what they’re going to do after the budget is done.

Nor will I discuss the House of Delegates or the State Senate races yet, since we still don’t know what the districts are for those races.

As I get more information about these and other races, I’ll post ’em up here.

UPDATE: Lloyd put up a post at TC about the state of the races from the Republican point of view. Apparently, one of the candidates for Sheriff dropped out.

A Pledge from the Doorbell Queen

Starting with this cycle, and continuing until I say otherwise, I will not endorse any candidate for any office unless I personally put some shoe leather into the game for that candidate.

No walking? No talking.

If you see me endorsing a candidate here, it will mean I put some sweat equity into their campaign.

I may expand this to candidates I donate trackable money to.
