Am I the only one who is puzzled by the Comprehensive Transportation Plan and its lack of comprehensiveness?
(Here’s a link to the Countywide Transportation Plan, for those who might want one. – P13)Where did they come up with the idea of all those 6-lane North/South roads? Where is the sense in that?
What we need are more and better East/West roads. The biggest jam-ups we get going North/South are from folks trying to avoid the Greenway and Rte 50 (one for the completely outrageous cost and the other for the completely outrageous volume.)
We need East/West arteries and, more specifically, we need mass transit. Not just the Metro – though I love me the Metro, New Yawkuh that I am. We need bus service. Lots and lots of bus service. We need to be able to get from our neighborhoods to our jobs without needing to get into a car. Buses can do that. Partnerships with HOAs and local businesses to get vanpools to bus-stations could be a start, but actually having a county-wide (or, dare I hope, region-wide) transportation system could be a cost-effective and environmentally-friendly alternative to the mess we’re currently in.
6-lane North/South roads? No thank you. Bus Service? Yes, please.
I believe it has something to do with the townhomes packed in right off Riverside near River Creek Parkway.
But you’re right – be consistent and make it 4 lanes from Rte. 15 to Rte. 28 (or LCP).
This comes from being the most densely packed suburb without a Federal Interstate. Our local roads burdens are relatively higher than our neighboring counties.
I’d love to see Gloucester and Russell Branch finished. Finishing Russell Branch, however, means another bridge over Goose Creek sometime soon, which has its own set of problems.
And as for the E-W Riverside Parkway north of 7, what’s with the 25MPH 1 lane zone coming out of nowhere? If it’s going to be a divided road, it should be at least 40MPH and stay divided.
But I have ideas for other bus routes that could be just as popular, one of which I’ll post tomorrow.
are definitely what we need. It seems that this is the way it’s leaning, at least with regard to us in the North who use Route 28.
I believe the Gloucester Parkway build-out is dependent on Kincora’s approval, and the new Russell Branch Parkway extension to Loudoun County Parkway will help, too, when the Parkway interchange is fully completed.
What we really need is an extension of Riverside Parkway (north of Route 7) to the Parkway, if not all the way to Route 28. There’s a lot of housing density in the area between Route 15, Route 7, Route 28, and the Potomac. Right now, everything funnels on to 7, and it creates massive congestion.
In my opinion, though, buses wouldn’t be very popular. The way all of our jobs are spread out in office parks all over Fairfax & Loudoun counties, it would probably take longer to continually transfer between buses than to just drive to work. Again, just my opinion. Buses work well for those going to the district, and from what I hear, the express buses to the District are always full. I don’t think it would be as attractive for suburban workers.
