Reading the labels

High Fructose Corn Syrup — which the corn refiners are trying to get renamed to “corn sugar” — has been in the news a lot lately. I’m not fond of ingesting, or letting my son ingest, things that have been found to contain mercury, so we’re trying to stay away from HFCS. And so we’ve been reading labels. Lots and lots of labels.First on the list to go was factory-produced breads. Believe it or not, most of them contain HFCS. So now we buy what they bake on the premises at Wegmans.

Corn Flakes (yes, plain Corn Flakes!) is no longer welcome in our house due to the pernicious presence. Amazingly, Wegmans Brand Marshmallow Treasures is HFCS-free. I can’t pronounce everything else it contains, but it doesn’t have that.

Cheerios is HFCS-free. Yay Cheerios!

Old Dominion Root Beer has no HFCS. It is made from cane sugar and honey. And it used to be produced locally. I miss Old Dominion, don’t you?

Global Foods Mart has an enormous offering of packaged foods that don’t contain HFCS.

In general, the fresher and less packaged the product, the less likely it will be to contain HFCS. Just read the labels.

Did you see the great spread on Jeff Barnett in the Washington Post?

In 1996, Air Force Col. Jeffery R. Barnett published a book predicting how wars would be prosecuted in 2010.

Now, Barnett is engaged in an uphill battle far different from the ones he imagined: He is running to unseat Rep. Frank R. Wolf (R-Va.) in the 10th Congressional District.

Read the rest here!!

My favorite part is where he promises to walk the whole district every two years. That appeals to my canvassing heart.

Wow, today’s BOS meeting has gone through a LOT of stuff!

Christmas displays (yes); staggered terms (no); pay raises for the BOS and perhaps to go to a full-time board (come back with more info); give school overage back to the teachers to cover the furlough days (no).

And that’s just a start.

I’m home sick today, so I’ve been watching the whole thing. I am fascinated.

LCDC meeting tonight

Where: Board Room at the Government Center

When: 7:30

Special guest: Tony Howard of the Loudoun Chamber of Commerce. He’ll give a talk and then take questions!

Stevens and other members of the BOS will talk about the Chesapeake Bay Protection act and will take questions. By the way, did you know that the LCRC is against the CBPA? Resolutions against things that will help the environment that start out with

WHEREAS, the Loudoun County Republican Committee strongly supports clean air and clean water,

And then goes on to say, basically, but not if it means we have to personally do anything about it. always strike me as amusing.

Someone from Jeff Barnett’s campaign will be there to give us an update, but Jeff himself will be at Herndon’s Town Hall Meeting.

As always, LCDC meetings are open to the public, with published agendas and minutes and whatnot.

I will not be in attendance tonight, as it is Back to School Night at my son’s school! But if you can attend, I’m sure you’ll be in for an interesting and dynamic meeting.
