Forgot to mention…

This had been a post inviting everyone to come to a panel discussion Stevens was a part of earlier today…but because I was in a hurry, I failed to post it to the front page. Then, trying to fix it from my phone, I seem to have deleted the contents of the post.

Today, technology and I had a misunderstanding.

Tomorrow, I hope, will be better.

What’s wrong with…

“That’s retarded!” or any derivation of that word?

I work with and link to and get linked from disabilities activists (and I’m on the Loudoun County Community Services Board (and the VACSB)) and using “retard” or any derivation of that word is like using “nigger”. By using that word to describe a person or action, you’re not insulting that person or action. Instead, you’re saying that likening that person or action to people with intellectual disabilities is inherently insulting. Which means you’re insulting an entire community of people who are blameless.

I have been assured that people with intellectual disabilities do, indeed, feel insulted when that word is used. And they would like for all of us to please just stop using it at all and particularly to stop using it as a way to insult people or actions that are spectacularly foolish or inept.

I am assured by people with physical disabilities that “lame” is similarly hurtful.

Since I tend to NOT want to hurt innocent bystanders when I make criticisms of behaviors I find ludicrous or inane, I have modified my vocabulary accordingly.

Alternatives to “retarded” and/or “lame”: Foolish, inept, uncool, clumsy, inane, obtuse, dull, disappointing, unthinking, misguided, disasterously unsuccessful.

Please add your own alternatives to these words in comments.

Comments that ask what ever happened to freedom of speech* will be deleted from the comments thread, but I will keep a tally of them and will post a total later.

Comments that use offensive words just to use offensive words and not to offer up non-offensive alternatives will be deleted.

Reintroducing myself, since some of you seem to have some misconceptions

Hi! I’m Liz Miller. I am the wife of Stevens Miller, the current Dulles District Supervisor. I blog as The Doorbell Queen, and often give the impression of being a generally light-hearted, easy-going person.

Here is the truth: I am the one who argued for a commenting policy.

I am the one who is fastest with the ban-hammer.

I am the one who doesn’t like people attacking other people on-line.

I don’t like to see insults passing back and forth.

I don’t like comments on blogs about people’s looks, or level of intelligence, or sexuality, or state of mental health, or whether they are gender-conforming, or their personality problems, or who they may or may not be sleeping with.

And here’s where I’m a hypocrite…I will absolutely join in those conversations in person or in email, but I won’t allow it on a blog I’ve got any admin power over.

So, on this blog, we do not allow you to call anyone a bitch, even if I am one.

And I do not allow you to say, “That’s so lame” or “that’s so gay” or “that’s retarded”.

“Lapdog” is a phrase that is used almost exclusively about men whom people are accusing of being under the thrall of someone else, (almost always a woman). It is belittling, and sexist, and I’m unhappy with its use on this blog. My co-bloggers overruled my putting the user of this phrase into moderation.

Today is that user’s lucky day.

Training for the season

It’s that time of the year again. The time of year when flowers bloom, trees leaf out, and canvassers go knocking.

So, I’ve broken out my sneakers and I walk over a mile every day to get ready for the door knocking that is to come.

And, of course, Relay for Life. Last year I walked over 20 miles, this year I’m aiming for 26.1.

This year, you’ll see me walking for Jennifer Wexton, Mike Kondratick, and anyone running against Eugene Delgaudio, amoung others.

Who are you walking for?

The names have changed but the map’s the same

Last night, the BOS voted to reconsider the names they gave to two of the districts. The Ashdowne district is now Ashburn, and the (Jennie) Dean district is now (again?) Dulles.

So here’s the line-up:

  • Algonkian (formerly Sugarland Run)
  • Ashburn (includes parts of Ashburn and most of Lansdowne)
  • Blue Ridge (includes Middleburg, Hamilton, Purcellville, Brambleton,  and some of Loudoun Valley Estates)
  • Broad Run (includes Dulles Town Center, some of Sterling, some of Ashburn, and most of the Broadlands)
  • Catoctin (includes Lovettsville and a bit of Lansdowne
  • Dulles (includes South Riding, the airport, and some of Loudoun Valley Estates)
  • Leesburg (includes…Leesburg)
  • Sterling (includes Sterling and Cascades)

For a list of which Democratic candidate is running for each district, look at this post.

HOD and Senate seats for Loudoun

Holy guacamole, those HOD and Senate maps make Loudoun’s redistricting look rational.

Here’s what we’ve got:

4 Senate Seats

  • A bit of a district that runs all the way from Arlington into Sugarland Run. Long and narrow, runs along the Potomac. That’s one that’s probably going to have a heavy primary.
  • Blue Ridge, and some of Ashburn, including my old house in the Broadlands, are in a district that reaches into Fauquier and Prince William Counties and stretches down as far as Warrenton. That there is Colgan and Marshall country. I’m guessing it’ll be pretty red.
  • Herring’s district is an L with one line stretching from Leesburg, along the Potomac into Sterling and then down into Herndon below Rte. 50.
  • I can’t even believe the last one. It’s a check mark that includes most of Catoctin, gets every thing to West Virginia and then slides down under the district that includes the Broadlands. It is a mess.

6, possibly 7 HOD Seats

  • Rust’s district no longer includes Oak Grove, Buchanan, or the other couple of precincts he lost in Loudoun.
  • Lemunyon keeps Little River.
  • Greason’s district shrank a bit.
  • May’s district moved farther West, and lost most of Leesburg.
  • Leesburg is now in an open district.
  • Mike Kondradick is in an open district…including some of the precincts Rust gave up.
  • And it looks like there’s a little tongue of a Fairfax district up in Sugarland Run.

All-in-all, it’s…impressive.
